Ilulissat - Homestay
Icebergs are called Ilulissat
in Greenlandic, and it comes as no surprise to anyone who
has been here, that this is the name of the
town. 4.800 people and at least 2.500 sledge
dogs live in Ilulissat.
Ilulissat is beautifully situated
at the mouth of the 40-kilometer long ice fjord, filled
with enormous icebergs produced by the
most productive glacier in the northern
hemisphere. The largest icebergs strand at
the mouth - at depths of 250 to 300 meters -
and do not break free before the next spring
tide, or until they are so eroded that the balance shifts.
The area of the municipality is 47.000 km2.
Of this, only 5.500 km2 is ice-free, and the
ocean covers 6.000 km2.
During the winter, the dogsledge is an
important mean of transport - also for
fishing from the ice. The harbour is filled
with fishing vessels and trawlers that bear
witness to the great importance of fishing to
the town. The fishing plant is the biggest
shrimp factory in northern Europe. The
factory also processes Greenland halibut.
The spectacular Ice-fjord makes Ilulissat a
powerfull center of tourism, and many excursions
and tours are available. Only a couple
of kilometers from the town is the lush Sermermiut
valley. In 1727, this was the site of a
large settlement of 250 people. Excavations
have since shown that the valley had been
inhabited for thousands of years.
For dinner enjoy Greenlandic halibut cooked
in at least 5 different ways, as well as
shrimp, reindeer and whale. Take a closer
look at the variety of flowers, and take a
walk in the midnight sun.
