Qaqortoq
- Homestay
Qaqortoq means The White. It
was founded in 1775, and is today the largest town in south Greenland
with more than 3.400 inhabitants. Three settlements and numerous
sheep farms together with the town constitutes the municipality.
The area of the community is 8.500
km2. Of this area only 2.500 km2 is ice-free and 5.000 km2 is ocean.
The town has several fair-sized
companies. Great Greenland puchases sealskins, tans them and produce
some of the world's most coveted furs. Next to the fur company is
the shipyard for the southern region.
The town square with Greenland's
oldest fountain is situated close to the harbour where the fishermen
arrive every day with the day's catch on board. The square is encircled
by some well-preserved buildings from the colonial era, the oldest
of which were built more than 200 years ago. Several of the buildings
still play an important role ind the town's daily life where old
and new prosper side by side.
Have a close look where you go.
Throughout Qaqortoq you meet examples of the unique art project
»Stone and Man«. Scandinavian sculptors together with the local
artist have contributed pieces of art chiselled in granite that
transform the town into one big sculpture park.
Enjoy the meals with sheep, seal,
reindeer, whale and fish. Look forward to tasting the southgreenland
vegetables like carrots, potatoes and radish.
