Nuuk - Get together
Nuuk means the cape or foreland
and is
located at the tip of a large peninsula by
the mouth of the gigantic Nuuk fjord. The
town is the oldest in Greenland, built by
the Danish missionary Hans Egede in 1728,
after he had abandoned his first settlement
at the Isle of Hope all the way out by
the Davis Strait.
The town is also the largest in Greenland
with 14.272 inhabitants in addition
to the 383 persons living in the settlements
Kapisillit and Qeqertarsuatsiaat.

The municipal area is 105.000 km2, of
which 19.000 km2 is ice-free. The ocean
covers 6.500 km2.
Nuuk is the capital of Greenland where
old meets new in a Greenlandic fashion. A
short walk from the colonial harbour with
its beautiful old buildings will take you
past the local meat and fish market, where
the days catch is sold. In Nuuk you can
enjoy freshly caught seal, fish and birds
every day of the year, and in season also
caviar, berries and whale.
The modern administration buildings
of the Greenland Home Rule Government
lie next to Katuaq, the Greenland Cultural
Centre, prized for its beautiful architecture
and a huge variety of cultural events.
Being the capital, Nuuk also houses a
university, teachers college, cathedral and
the national Museum, where visitors can
spend hours studying the prehistoric times
of Greenland.
All sorts of landscapes ranging from
high mountains to huge savannahs and of
course the fjord itself with several glaciers
offer many opportunities for hiking, sailing,
hunting, and fishing. Geologically,
the area is of outmost interest. The oldest
stone was found on a little island in the
archipelago, and the mountains contain
precious stones and uranium ore.
For dinner enjoy fish, crab, whale, seal,
reindeer, birds, musk oxen and scallops.
Gather and eat stalks of the popular
»Kvan« (Kuannit in Greenlandic), which is
a green leaf-like vegetable (Angelica
Archangelica).
